WiMAX solutions provider Alvarion Ltd. (Nasdaq: ALVR; TASE:ALVR) today announced that it was awarded a $6 million contract by ICE Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE), Costa Rica’s leading operator for telecommunications and electricity. Alvarion will implement a turnkey project to provide advanced broadband services, deploying its 4Motion solution with its WiMAX Forum Certifie BreezeMAX 2500 platform, and enabling ICE to enhance its network performance, while providing customers with advanced means of communication.
Implementation of the network will begin in San Jose and the rural areas of Limon. As part of this turnkey project, Alvarion will provide ICE with thousands of customer premises equipment, radio planning, system integration and configuration support, maintenance services at customer premises, training courses, and more. Telerad is Alvarion’s local partner for this project.

Research published last week by Infonetics showed that the global economic crisis has had a negative impact on the WiMAX sector with a 21% decrease in sales in the third quarter of 2008 compared with the second quarter. However, there was a positive side to the research for Alvarion, which leads the mobile WiMAX market. The report showed that Alvarion's sales had overtaken those of both Alcatel-Lucent and Motorola. Alcatel-Lucent recently announced that they are reducing their investment in WiMAX as part of a corporate reorganization.
