Green Party turns to courts in Ashkelon power plant battle

Environmentalists urge authorities to seek cleaner alternatives.

The Green Party has petitioned to the High Court of Justice to stop the building of the coal-fired power plant in Ashkelon. The party is also asking the court to issue an injunction preventing any further work on the plant until a final ruling is given.

The Green Party is demanding that the authorities conduct a full and comprehensive study of alternatives for electricity production and to look at alternative environmentally friendly energy solutions that do not cause pollution, such as wind turbines and solar farms.

The Green Party also claims that before approving and moving forward with the building of the plant, the authorities should obtain the approval of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Environmental protection, which are both strongly opposed to it. Both ministries insist that the plant will cause massive, irreversible damage to the coastal area. The Green Party claims that building a coal-fired power plant in Ashkelon will be severely damaging to the health of residents in the region.
