Israelis prefer to live near school over work - survey

Work proximity is a high priority to less than a quarter of respondents.

A survey by Geocartography Knowledge Ltd. shows a change in Israelis’ residential preferences. The survey of home buyers found that Israelis are prepared to travel long distances and sit in traffic to get to work in order to live in locations believed to have higher quality education. The survey was commissioned by residential contractor ZMH Hammerman Ltd.

The survey included 508 respondents, reflecting a nationwide sample of adult Jews in Israel. The respondents were asked which factor was more important in choosing their residence: the community’s level of education, or proximity to work. 52.1% of respondents said that they preferred living in a location with good schools, compared with 22.4% who cited proximity to work as a priority.

60.2% of respondents aged up to 34 said that they preferred living near good schools. The proportion of respondents citing this preference declines with age; 39.9% of respondents aged over 55 said that good schools were a priority. Good schools are also important for high-income earners and religious and haredi (ultra-orthodox) respondents: 63.1% of high-income earners and 64.4% of religious and haredi respondents cited good schools as a priority for picking their residence.

In contrast, good schools were cited by just 35.8% of new immigrants.
