Record electricity demand as heat wave hits

Electricity demand hit an all-time high today at 2:30 pm - 9,900 megawatts.

Electricity demand hit an all-time high today at 2:30 pm of 9,900 megawatts. The record demand is the result of the two-day heat wave throughout the country. This is the second time this summer that electricity demand has broken records. The previous record of 9,670 megawatts was recorded on June 28.

Israel Electric Corporation’s (IEC) available production capacity is 10,400 megawatts, which leaves a reserve of just 5% above the peak demand. IEC said that a breakdown in any of its large production units was liable to result in disruptions of power supplies to consumers.

In view of its low reserve, IEC this morning asked its large customers to operate their generators to reduce electricity demand, which helped the company meet the heavy demand.

IEC deputy CEO and VP production and transport Moshe Bachar said electricity supplies were normal, despite the rise in demand.
