Jerusalem municipality proposes new recycling regulations

Businesses and large supermarkets must install carton and packaging compressors for recycling.

The Jerusalem municipality has passed a bylaw mandating businesses and large supermarkets to install carton and packaging compressors for recycling. The bylaw includes enforcement measures and has been sent to Minister of the Interior Meir Sheetrit for approval.

The municipality has also found a site in the Givat Shaul neighborhood where it will build a new recycling center, which will receive bottles, plastic containers, plastic packaging, paper products, and cartons. The center will separate the waste by type and send to recycling centers around the country.

The bylaw also stipulates new arrangements for recycling, use of recycling installations, and the separation of waste by type. The bylaw also stipulates the enforcement measures that the municipality will employ.

The Jerusalem municipality’s decision apparently came in response to the landfill fees that the Knesset passed earlier this month. The fee will rise progressively with each ton of garbage sent to landfills. A 1995 survey found that paper and cartons account for 28% of garbage, plastic products 35%, and organic materials 14%.
