Alvarion wins Uganda WiMAX contract

MTN Uganda chose the company’s WiMAX solution BreezeCOM for a nationwide deployment of data services.

WiMAX solutions provider Alvarion Ltd. (Nasdaq: ALVR; TASE: ALVR) will supply its BreezeMAX to MTN Uganda Ltd., the country’s mobile telecommunications operator, to provide data services for business and private users on a nationwide basis. The project will begin in the capital Kampala and expand to 30 cities across the country. Alvarion did not disclose the size of the contract.

Alvarion is providing a turn-key solution through its African partners, Dimension Data Ltd., an IT services and solutions provider, and Plessey Ltd., a pan-African telecommunications solutions supplier.

Alvarion president and CEO of Tzvika Friedman said, "We are excited that MTN Uganda selected us to provide broadband services to all types of users throughout the region. Africa is a fast-growing region and we are confident that MTN will benefit from our operator-centric OPEN WiMAX approach, BreezeMAX's advanced features and high quality of service, as they strategically move towards nationwide broadband coverage and improved WiMAX economics."
