Comverse wins Poland cellular contract

Oppenheimer & Co. has upgraded the stock to “Buy”.

Comverse Technology Inc. (Pink Sheets: CMVT.PK) has won a contract with new Polish cellular provider, Play, to manage its converged billing operations and value-added services. Comverse will supply its Converged Billing, InSight Open Services Environment, SMS, MMS, Messaging Gateway, Mobile Internet Gateway, and Data Control and Monitoring Point products. The two companies will deploy a joint team of specialists to create an optimal system.

Play is the new brand of P4, founded by Icelandic fund Novator and a Polish alternative fixed-line operator in September 2004, and was granted a UMTS license in August 2005, with initial service launch in March, 2007. The company provides cellular services to businesses and private subscribers.

In a separate development, Oppenheimer & Co. upgraded its recommendation for Comverse to “Buy” from “Neutral” because of what it called increased profitability from strategic activities that the company will carry out in the next six months, which will add value for shareholders. These activities include cost-cutting, a possible change in the company’s capital structure, and the sale of assets. Oppenheimer says that when Comverse completes the revision of its financial reports, it will be able to buy back shares, spin off Verint Systems Inc. (Pink Sheets: VRNT.PK), or make an offer to purchase for Ulticom Inc. (Pink Sheets: ULCM.PK). Oppenheimer adds that following Apple Inc.’s (Nasdaq:AAPL) inclusion of visual programs in its iPhone, Comverse will be able to add it to mailboxes.
