Alvarion, Intel unveil mobile WiMAX solutions

Alvarion CEO Tzvika Friedman: WiMAX is growing. We’ll meet our growth target of 15-20% a year.

Alvarion Ltd. (Nasdaq: ALVR; TASE: ALVR) will unveil its 4Motion solution at Intel Corp.’s (Nasdaq:INTC) Developer's Forum in Beijing. 4Motion technology underlies mobile WiMAX. The two companies will also their MIMO technology, which is at the demo stage.

Alvarion president and CEO Tzvika Friedman said, “The collaboration with Intel and the demonstration of the new technology shows our strength.

Alvarion said that its Open WiMAX 4Motion solution using MIMO Matrix B technology was expected to almost double the bandwidth capacity, reducing wireless infrastructure expenditures for operators.

Friedman added, “MIMO technology is a type of sophisticated antenna that improves system performance. Although all the big companies - Motorola, Nokia, and Samsung - are operating in the field, Intel picked us as a partner. Without question, working closely with Intel is very important. Intel has great marketing power worldwide, and it’s promoting WiMAX.”

Intel is bidding in a Sprint Nextel Corporation (NYSE:S) tender for a nationwide deployment of WiMAX in the US. Friedman said that Alvarion did not submit a bid in this tender, but he did not rule out that it might “help out” if necessary. “The market is slowing at the macro level, but WiMAX is a growing sector. We believe that we’ll meet our growth target of 15-20% a year.”
