Start-up Infra-Com, STM develop wireless audio solution

Infra-Com develops short range diffused infrared wireless communication integrated circuits.

Israeli start-up Infra-Com Ltd. and STMicroelectronics Inc. (NYSE: STM) have announced a complete reference design for a high-bit-rate wireless audio solution intended for consumer electronic products. The companies did not disclose expected revenue from their joint design.

STMicroelectronics develops digital audio integrated circuits and Infra-Com develops short range diffused infrared (DIR) wireless communication integrated circuits, which do not require line-of-sight between the transmitter and receiver. The DIR floods a room with the infrared emissions utilizing reflections from the ceiling, walls, floor and other surfaces to maintain communications, unaffected by obstructions or by moving people within the enclosure. The link effectively behaves similarly to a radio signal within its operating space, but without being affected by, or generating, radio frequency interference; it is also insensitive to remote control signals, and cannot be 'overheard' in an adjacent room. DIR is a worldwide unregulated technology operating at 870nm. The two companies’ solution is designed for home entertainment systems, such as home theater systems, surround-sound and gaming speakers, DTV speakers, portable music and aftermarket accessories.

Infa-Com was founded in 1999 by Tamir Sha’anan. The company is headquartered in Netanya and has an office in Hong Kong. IVC online says the company has ten employees and has raised $4 million to date in three financing rounds.
