Environmentalists petition against J'lem rail line

"The tender planners have ignored matters that could damage the environment."

The Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel and the Israel Union for Environmental Defense today petitioned the Jerusalem District Court for an injunction to halt the tender for building a the section of the high-speed Tel Aviv-Jerusalem railway between Sha’ar Hagai and Mevasseret Zion. The two organizations claim that the tender planners had ignored matters that could damage the environment. The tender does not mention were the earth dug from the railway line’s tunnels, which total 17 kilometers in length, will be dumped. The organizations also claim that the builders’ deployment areas and access roads are in unique natural areas.

The petitioners say that there is no need to rush ahead with the tender at the expense of careful planning, especially since the railway line is a precedent-setting infrastructure project with potentially severe environmental impact.
