The Green Police tested the exhaust of 6,135 cars during 2006, and took 30% off the road until they were repaired. 13% of drivers were fined NIS 500-1,500 each for exceeding pollution limits.

Green Police commander Amir Levin said air pollution was a severe environmental and health hazard, which caused sickness and even death. For this reason, the Green Police conducted surprise inspections.

The Ministry of the Environment said that 1,100 persons died every year in the Dan region from air pollution-related causes, and that it was obvious that cars were the principle polluters.
