Fines for environmental crime up 10% in 2006

The Oil Refineries received the highest fine of all, NIS 1.6 million, for air pollution.

Courts in Israel imposed fines totaling NIS 9.2 million on environmental offenders in 2006, a 10% increase over 2005, the Ministry of the Environment reports. The ministry’s legal department handled 558 cases, 101 of which went to court. 98 cases resulted in full or partial convictions.

The Oil Refineries received the highest fine of all, NIS 9.2 million, for air pollution. 40% of the cases dealt with waste-related offenses, and 22% dealt with pollution of water and lakes. The rest focused on sea and beachfront pollution, illegal signage, and use of hazardous substances and pesticides.
