Lufthansa donates €10,000 to monitor migrating cranes

Lufthansa has donated €10,000 to a Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel project for monitoring migrating cranes. The project includes satellite surveillance of the crane migration, carried out by the Israel Birdwatching Center and the International Center for the Study of Bird Migration at Latrun.

Lufthansa’s logo is the crane, and the airline participates in global research on the bird, donating €120,000 to date for this purpose. An estimated 50,000 fly over Israel on their annual migrations between Europe and Ethiopia.

Israel Birdwatching Center director Dan Alon said there was already information about the cranes’ migration route between Israel and Europe. He said Lufthansa’s donation would finance research into the southern leg of the journey to Ethiopia. The exact route is vital, to learn where they land so these sites can be protected from hunters and poisons.

Lufthansa general manager and representative for Israel Ofer Kisch said Lufthansa financed the Crane Association in Germany.
