New regulation reduces sulfur in gasoline

Oil Refineries Haifa is the only refinery capable of producing 98-octane low-sulfur gasoline.

The Knesset Economics Committee, chaired by MK Moshe Kahlon (Kadima) has approved a new regulation, under which the permitted level of sulfur in 98-Octane gasoline will be lowered to 50 milligrams to 10 milligrams. The new ordinance will come into force in two months time.

The order was proposed by Minister of National Infrastructures Benjamin Ben Eliezer in consultation with Minister of Transport Shaul Mofaz. As Oil Refineries Haifa is the only refinery capable of producing 98-octane low-sulfur gasoline, its revenue will grow by hundreds of millions of shekels at the expense of Oil Refineries Ashdod.

Kahlon said that the new order would improve environmental standards and reduce disease incidence rates.
